Who We Are

Who We Are

The Eastern Mediterranean Poison Control Centers Network is a regional network of poison centers in Afghanistan, Bahrain, Djibouti, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. It aims at facilitating communication and promoting collaboration that advance the care of our poisoned patients, and establish meaningful research endeavors between all the members.

About The Network

Poisoning presents a significant public health burden in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. This challenging issue requires specialized facilities to advise on, and assists with, the prevention, diagnosis and management of poisoning cases accordingly. Poisons centres have been identified as a required capacity for implementation of the International Health Regulations (2005). The poison information centers are units that support the provision of toxicological information and advice, management of poisoning cases, provision of laboratory analytical services, toxicovigilance activities, research, and education and training in the prevention and treatment of poisoning. It also plays an important role in developing contingency plans for, and responding to, chemical disasters, in monitoring the adverse effects of drugs, and in handling problems of substance abuse. It is of utmost importance that centers need to cooperate with other centers in the region to complement each other and maximize the benefit of the limited available resources.

This network is established in line with the recommendations on an expert consultation that was organized by the World Health Organization (WHO)/ Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean/ Regional Centre for Environmental Health Action in Amman, Jordan in February 2019. The consultation identified strengthening capacities of poison centers as a major step towards preparedness and management of chemical events and emergencies. The objectives of the network are:

  1. Sharing information and promoting evidence-based, cost-effective management of poisoning.
  2. Conducting multidisciplinary research.
  3. Translating research into practice in the Region by strengthening and expanding applied toxicological capacity.
  4. Optimizing the utilization of the limited available resources through joint actions.
  5. Networking with regional and global associations, networks, and organizations.
