E-Cigarette…..A growing problem
What is an E-Cigarette?
E-cigarette is a battery-operated device that heats liquid into an aerosol that is eventually inhaled by the user. This liquid contains a high concentration of nicotine solution that comes with appealing flavors and scents. E-Cigarette is considered to have the greatest nicotine concentration relative to other tobacco products found in the market. Initially, this battery operated device was developed for smokers to assist them to quit smoking cigarettes; later on, it became very popular among those who have never been smoking.
Is it something we should be concerned about?
Nicotine addiction, battery explosions causing injury, toxic chemical additives and lung injury have been all linked to the use of e-cigarette and vaping. But what worry us the most is that poison centers are receiving more and more calls about young kids and toddlers who were exposed to the liquid concentrated nicotine solution. Just a few drops of this concentrated nicotine solution requires a visit to the emergency department for evaluation. It causes nausea, vomiting, increased heart rate and blood pressure, seizures and even death in young kids. If you have any of these products at home, make sure they are kept away from the hands of your children. Don’t hesitate to call the poison center if you suspect that your child have swallowed the liquid nicotine even if just a few drops.
